Minimum Qualifications

Experience & Professional Standards
  • ASE Certification or 3+ Years Hands-On Experience Current ASE certification (A1-A8) or verifiable shop/dealership mechanic diagnostic experience.
  • Reliable Personal Transportation & Driver's License Valid state driver's license and dependable vehicle to commute to local sellers & dealerships.
  • Smartphone & Fast Response Time iOS or Android device with high-res camera. Ability to respond to inspection alerts within 24 hours.
  • Clean Background & Professional Demeanor Professional customer interaction skills and clean background check.

  • OBD-II Diagnostic Scan Tool Professional code reader capable of scanning active, pending, and cleared engine & transmission fault codes.
  • Digital Paint Depth Meter Magnetic/ultrasonic paint thickness gauge to inspect body panel paint and detect hidden Bondo repair.

You'll need current ASE certification (A1-A8) or at least 3 years of verifiable shop or dealership diagnostic experience, a valid driver's license with a reliable personal vehicle, a smartphone with a good camera, and a clean background check.

Our technical onboarding team reviews every application within 24 hours. Once you're approved, inspection alerts start coming in for your chosen service territory right away.

Payouts start at $70 per inspection and increase with the vehicle type:

  • Discern Essential — $70
  • Discern Complete — $80
  • Discern Elite — $90

Exotic/Exotic Performance and Commercial/RV jobs pay more still, scaled by travel radius. You'll always see the exact payout before accepting an alert.

Once your completed report clears our internal QA review, payment is sent by direct deposit (ACH) — it typically lands in your account within 24 to 48 hours.

No separate reimbursement — your per-inspection payout is all-inclusive and already accounts for local travel within your service territory.

You'll add your bank account details during onboarding, once your application has been approved — no need to submit them upfront.

Bring an OBD-II diagnostic scanner, a digital paint depth gauge, a tire tread depth micrometer, a 12V battery voltage tester, an LED inspection flashlight, a telescoping mirror, and a smartphone for photos and report logging.

Yes — every inspection needs a complete photo set (and a cold-start walkaround video for Complete and Elite packages) logged through the inspector app. Reports missing required media won't clear QA.

No — all inspections are logged through Discern's own app and checklist so every report stays consistent and meets our QA standard. Outside forms or paperwork aren't accepted.

Never. Discern is an independent inspection platform only — we don't sell repairs, parts, or maintenance services. Your only job is delivering an honest, unbiased diagnostic evaluation.
